I had the pleasure of reviewing a new artist this week, MerCee, representing Durham, NC. When I receive music from new artists, I listen to them for a few days over and over. Then I add them to my playlist(s) to see how the new artist might fair against the ruthless rap industry. Let's check out MerCee and "Lemme Holla at Ya" this week.
MerCee was introduced to QC by Burn Unit Records located in Durham, NC. I must say I was very impressed with the presentation and the song, "Lemme Holla at Ya," didn't disappoint either. The track is bass heavy with the mids, highs and catchy lyrics to compliment. The lyrics have some tight metaphors and similes that separate the great rappers from the good rappers from the rappers. This track alone puts MerCee in the good category and I see a lot of promise for MerCee to do great things!
MerCee also has a tight MySpace page. New artist ... this is how it should be done! This is by far the best presentation we have ever received from a new artist and will be the bar used to gauge other newcomers. Check out MerCee's MySpace page.
When listening to new music, I try to determine where the song and artist might fit. As we all know, every song labeled as "rap" is not "rap" and we all know that can push my buttons! Have no fear, this song is real rap! MerCee is a real rapper! You can hear the southern bass in the beats but the flow sounds more like a northern influence. I added this track to two different playlists, "JD Down Souf Pimps" and "JD Up Nawf Hip Hop" to get my ratings for the song. I can honestly say MerCee wrecked shop when going against Down Souf newcomers like Souljah Boy and Hurricane Chris. MerCee also didn't show any drop off in the Up Nawf playlist against MIMS. I had to give MerCee 4 CDs out of 5 for "Lemme Holla at Ya."
Damn this song is everywhere i seen it on myspace, youtube heard it on the radio, in the clubs and now im seein reviews online??? I guess now i'm waitin to see the music video
