Christians Teaching in Multicultural Environments E-mail
Written by Roger Gibbons
Teaching in a diverse multicultural setting as a Christian will most likely be a learning opportunity as well as a challenging experience. Having to instruct students who will be of different races, backgrounds, cultures, and belief system can be enriching experience for the teacher, and can also provide an opportunity to exercise one’s faith and belief in one of several ways.

I cannot say that there was any one time or person that propelled me towards being a teacher nor can I say that I wanted to be a teacher since I was a little girl. Rather my life seemed to unfold in such a way that it was inevitable that I became one.

The I.C. Norcom Chorus is raising funds to take 30 advanced chorus musicians, 17 which are seniors, to NY, May 2009. The trip is aprox $8,000.00. Currently, the group has raised half the money. To raise more money, the chorus is hosting a "Gospel Explosion" on Friday, April 3, 20009 @ 7:00 p.m. in the I.C. Norcom auditorium. Several local artists and churches have volunteered to perform as well as Christian comedian, Nick Gordan. The tickets are $5.00 in advance and $7.00 at the door.

For more details about the chorus, contact Margaret Earls Gayadeen @ margaret.gayadeen AT pps.k12.va.us

Help the students out if you can. Not all today's children are doing the bad things we see on the evening news. These exceptional kids are doing great things and are sure to be successful adults.

I had applied to the Ministry of Education in 2001 for a teaching position under the “advice” of my mother. She seemed, at the time, more dissatisfied with my job and my salary as a Clerical Officer II at the National Insurance Board (N.I.B.) than I was. I was uninterested in teaching. When that telephone call came a year later, informing me that my application to teach had been accepted and that I had been assigned to the St. Pierre Composite School in Carenage, my heart sank. Armed with a prayer; a simplistic idea of what teaching entailed, and an unrecognized desire (at the time) to make a difference in children’s lives, I accepted the teaching position. After six years and experiences gained at two different schools, my enrollment in the Diploma in Education programme at the University of the West Indies has begun informing me that my profession is more than just the delivery of a curriculum of study; that it has linguistic, philosophical, psychological and sociological underpinnings that inform and pressure mould it.

The new Google favicon has taken over all my browsers ... except Mozilla's Sea Monkey. I have now had to make Sea Monkey my browser of choice until I can figure out how to turn off the favicon "feature" in all the other browsers Google has taken upon themselves to abuse.
