John McCain and Barack Obama squared off last night in their first Presidential debate. McCain was the clear winner of the debate as he displayed his foreign affairs expertise at numerous points during the debate.
However, McCain did not beat Obama bad enough to gain any ground on Obama. Barack Obama pur on a great performance to keep the debate close. McCain really needed to bloody Obama up in this debate. Similar to two heavyweight fighters where one is coming into the fight the fan favorite. The challenger needs to jump on him fast, especially on a topic considered to be your best. McCain let Barack Obama make it out of round 1 unscathed!
We saw a similar performance when Obama faced off against the debate queen, Hillary Clinton. She let Obama stick around in the debates a little too long which led to her demise. McCain is heading down the same path. Obama has done whatever it takes to win and debating McCain on McCain's strongest topic was no different.
McCain clearly won round 1, but it was not a convincing knock out win. He didn't even score a knock down or force a standing 8 count. Now he will have to pick up the pace on some of his weaker topics if he intends for the debates to do any good for his campaign.
