This Will Destroy You,Lymbyc Systym - Field Studies Review

The “Field Studies” split between Lymbyc Systym and This Will Destroy You is an intermingling of two bands and three genres, a beautifully intricate style combining rock, classical, and electronic. This intriguing genre of post-rock has two goals. The first is to present rock instrumentation in a different style, and the second is to write music in a style implementing the qualities of other fine arts such as novel and theater. The songs are instrumental, yet present this artistic quality in such a distinct manner that they can be divided into theatrical elements.

For example, “Processed Spirits,” the first track by Lymbyc Systym, can be broken up into the classic elements of inciting incident, rising action, climax, and denouement. The track begins with a mutated voice which becomes drowned out by supernal, electronic sounds, and fades into a simple riff. The riff is joined by drums and cymbals played with brushes, and incorporates blues-like elements. The inciting incident occurs with a brief dramatic pause, followed by the rising action of the music regaining power with a stronger theme of percussion and the former, unintelligible voice returns to the background. The song reaches its climax with cut time, and heavy percussion takes the lead with electronic strings in the background. The strings then reclaim the stage in a final denouement.

This CD has a poignant emotional quality which is enrapturing in its strength. The sounds consume the atmosphere and seem to contain it fully as a tangible creature. The two bands, which toured together last year, complement each other both as individual band members, and in the music. “Field Studies” is an experience which should not be neglected by any music lover.
