MerCee & Burn Unit Records are at it again. This time, MerCee hits you hard
with "No Joke" a track title which immediately made me think of the classic by
Eric B & Rakim. I know, I know, MerCee and Rakim in the same sentence! Just
hold on and let me explain. I was surprised to see and hear it too.
I started this track with Eric B & Rakim in mind and MerCee did too! But that
is where the Rakim references ended! MerCee is paying homage to Eric B & Rakim
and show mad respect with the track. He uses a small sample of the Rakim track's
music but the beat is so slowed down that you really don't mind the sample and
it actually enhances the song just right.
This follow up track to
"Let Me Holla At Ya" is at a different speed and a different flavor
altogether, showing MerCee is more than a one trick pony. I must admit that the
dude really has skills and I am very hard to please when it comes to lyrics.
MerCee slowed this track down and gave the track a battle rapper feel with his
hard, knocking out softies flow, very different from the party track feel given
by
"Let Me Holla At Ya."
MerCee is a breath of fresh air in a very watered down hip hop industry. He is
destined to blow up any day now. Look for "No Joke" and "Let Me Holla At Ya" on MerCee's upcoming album, "The Relapse" as it should be hot if the rest of the tracks resemble these two. If we could get 5 more new artists like MerCee,
we in the hip hop industry would be a lot better off! MerCee, stay true when
you blow up!
Look for Ocean Bre Taylor ripping up the R&B scene.
MerCee gets 4 CDs out of 5 for "No Joke" and we beg you to keep the underground
hits coming!
